Initially scheduled for November 23, the case of the detainee Wissem Sifouane was finally dealt with today, Wednesday, by the indictment chamber at the court of Algiers. As a reminder, this 24-year-old Kabyle activist from Tuvirett was arrested on January 12, 2022, Berber New Year’s Day, by Algerian gendarmes with a search of the family home.
After a week in police custody in the Algerian gendarmerie brigade in Bechloul, she was brought before the investigating judge of the Tuvirett court (Bouira), who had ordered her incarceration in Saïd Abid prison (Bouira). At the end of October, she was transferred to Koléa prison (Tipaza). She is being prosecuted on charges related to article 87 bis of the Algerian penal code, which makes it a crime to have an opinion different from the vision of the Algerian regime.
The arrest of Wissem Sifouane was part of a vast wave of arrests initiated by the Algerian regime against Kabyle activists and political leaders.
