The Yugurten band, like all performers who have made a pioneering effort to promote the Amazigh (Berber) language and culture, that the regime of the Arab colonialists attempts to erase. They pretend that the language is a folklore derived from Arabic language and culture, and they excludes the Yugurten by removing their products from sales and distribution. During the events of the Berber Spring in 1980, members of the group were arrested and detained. Yugurten was inspired by ancient folk tunes, which they arranged and modernized.
