Among the Kabyles, for a person to deserve the qualification of an artist, it is not like in Europe where one only needs to draw or paint, make a sculpture, sing or poop in a jar. With the Kabyles you have to be all of these things at the same time. Draw, paint, sculpt, make ceramics and sing, but above all don’t shit in a jar.
Hamsi Boubeker, a guy from my hometown, does all this wonderfully. If you’ve ever taken the metro in Brussels, you’ve probably seen one of his works adorning one of the metro stations in the capital of Europe. The station Lemonnier is his first station.
