Châteauneuf-du-Faou to Geneva: 880 km in 26 days to denounce the situation of the Kabyle people in Algeria
– Five Kabylian activists set off from Châteauneuf-du-Faou on Monday 2 September en route for Geneva. They will be walking 880 km to join a major gathering of the Kabyle diaspora in Europe. As well as being a militant act, it’s a real sporting challenge.
– On 28 September, when they arrive in Geneva, they will ask to meet representatives of the Human Rights Council to make their voices heard. They denounce kidnappings, imprisonment, and torture of Kabyle citizens.
– In their view, human rights are being flouted by the Algerian government, which is said to target any Kabyle citizen who speaks out against the regime.
– Tensions have existed between Kabylia and the Algerian government for years. The Kabyle region is calling for independence and is being severely repressed by government forces.
