Alarming health situation of hostage Mohand Taferka
The Kabyle League for Human Rights expresses its deep concern about the alarming situation of Mohand Taferka, currently incarcerated in Koléa prison. This information was relayed by his lawyer, Ms Yamina Alili, on her Facebook account.
During her last visit on 26 September, Ms Alili noted that Mohand Taferka was now obliged to use a wheelchair, as his legs were unable to support his weight, which was already very weak.
A Kabyle activist and former host of Berbère TV, Mohand Taferka was sentenced in June 2024 to two years’ imprisonment for “undermining national unity”. The Kabyle League for Human Rights holds the Algerian state responsible for anything that might happen to Mohand Taferka and undertakes to take his case to international level if necessary.
The League calls on the Algerian authorities to act urgently to guarantee Mohand Taferka immediate access to medical care appropriate to his condition. It warns against the risk of another innocent man dying in prison, joining the long list of prisoners who have fallen victim to medical negligence.
We also call on international human rights organisations to intervene and demand Mohand Taferka’s immediate release, so that he can receive the care he needs to ensure his survival and dignity. His place is not behind bars, but with his loved ones, where he can receive appropriate medical treatment.
